About

I’m Billy Gray, award-winning Technical Artist, and lecturer at the University of Staffordshire.

Currently, I am the only person employed specifically as a Lecturer in Technical Art worldwide.

Graduate of both Staffordshire University and the University of Hertfordshire, I’ve worked with multiple teams and clients to create publishable, high-quality, interactive products. Positioned as Principal Technical Artist on multiple group projects, the resulting pieces have secured first and finalist positions for multiple industry awards.

My passion for visual scripting, hard surface modelling, materials, and optimisation has allowed me to create many efficient and aesthetically pleasing products.

You can find me at games events, talks, roundtables, and panels- including the Symposium on Virtual Worlds Research, TIGA Educational Conference, and Develop:Brighton.

Attending and contributing to events like these helps me gain a more complete view of the industry, current practices, and ongoing research. It’s a great chance to network and connect with incredibly talented creatives, not to mention the free ice cream.

I hold the belief that a creative's work is only as strong as the experiences and media that they expose themselves to.

This has tied into the creation of the Side Quests vodcast, where Dr. Sharon Coleclough and I ramble through various forms of media - games, films, and TV, exploring them in depth. I also frequently appear on professional media output such as Level Of Detail, playing and discussing games with my colleagues, from retro classics to the latest releases.

Outside of development work, I really enjoy playing through entirely different genres of games, everything from FPS to strategy titles, horror, VR, narrative, and rhythm games.

Media as a whole plays a huge part of my life, especially physical media - steelbooks, discs, vinyls, tapes, artbooks...

And when I’m not immersed in media, I'm usually practising my baking and photography skills, keeping my creativity fresh.
